I see no train from Bilbao to either Barcelona or Madrid that will make it in less than 9.5 hrs. Is there a better option? I'm using thetrainline.com website.

On the Renfe website its 4 hr 30 minutes to Madrid (twice a day) and 7 hrs to Barcelona on the one daily train-

Bilbao has a fairly good airport, there should be a number of direct cheap flights to Barcelona or Madrid, probably Vueling, taking around an hour.

In 2013, we went the other direction, Madrid to Bilbao, and it took “only” five hours. Now, the 7am train from Bilbao Abando station direct to Madrid Chamartin is not only the fastest, but also the cheapest, less than $28 if you don’t go in First Class. Four hours and 28 minutes, not bad, although pretty early in the morning.
