Its a 5 hour trip and wondering if we need to buy tickets prior to our trip or can we just show up on the day of travel. We want to travel on a specific day.

I took a quick look at the Renfe website. The AVEs to San Sebastian do occasionally sell out, and you might save money on the fare if you are in a position to buy your tickets really early. The cheap ones will be non-changeable and non-refundable, so wait until you're certain of the timing.
