The best train is the high-speed Frecciarosa or AVE or TGV train that costs the least amount of money!

Renfe is one train company that goes from Barcelona to Madrid and the one we took on a Rick Steves tour. The high speed train is listed as AVE on the tickets. It's very fast, approximately 170 miles an hour, but a smooth ride. The slower trains or long distance trains are less expensive and shown online as AVLO on the ticket. There are other train companies but we haven't tried them. Below is a comparison of the different Spanish train services.

We used Iryo in August. Their website and app was easy to use. No complaints. Better price and time of departure for us than Renfe.

I recommend Iryo, www.iryo.eu
Renfe also have great trains, but the website is not the most user friendly so buying tickets is a lot easier with Iryo.
