train from barcelona to cordoba; then to granada same day

I will be leaving Barcelona on Sept. 24. Would like to take Ave to Cordoba, stash luggage at station, see the Meztika, then take train to Granada for the night. Can't find any itinerary for that date. Is that unusual for Renfe? Is it sensible to try to do this in one day?

There have in the recent past been "problems" with the train route from western Anadalusia to Granada, apparently the tracks are there but no train service due to what's been described as "political" problems. It may be that these problems have recently been resolved, or not, and I may have this garbled--perhaps some of the locals or frequent travelers between these destinations will know about the particulars.

There have been some topics on this here in the last six months, that you might be able to find using the Search box at the top of this window.

BTW, it may help in your internet searches to know that the usual English spelling is Mezquita.

It looks like the problem is that tickets aren't on sale yet from mid-September. They should be available soon. In the meantime, look at trains for a couple weeks earlier. Chances are schedules won't change.

On Sept 10, there are frequent trains to Cordoba. The 6.50 will get you there at 11.37 (less than 5 hours, no train change).

There are 2 possible trains from Cordoba to Granada, at 4.19 pm and and at 9.37 pm (about 1.5 hours).

With 4 hours in Cordoba, you have time to store luggage (at the bus station across the street from the train station) and have enough time for the Mezquita and a walk around the Juderia. It's about a 2 km walk from the station to the Mezquita. Taxis are not expensive. If you don't mind getting to Granada after 11 pm, you would have time to see more of Cordoba and dinner.

Also look at the Alsa buses. I see buses at 5 and 7 pm that take under 3 hours. Note that the bus station in Granada is not walking distance to the historic center. Take a taxi. I'd probably take a taxi from the train station also.

Thank you so much for the helpful response. I knew intellectually that the train must be available, but it has passed the 60 day mark and there are still no schedules and I am planning this trip for my family and am getting a bit concerned. So the reassurance is appreciated and I shall try to wait patiently. Gracias.

Spain often does schedule adjustments in mid-September that can make some or all schedules be released later than usual. But service is not really likely to be reduced, now that the direct train route has re-opened with fanfare.

Trish,

Is it sensible to try to do this in one day?

Check train schedules and decide if it’s sensible to you.

I’d be too tired after a 5-6 hour train ride from Barcelona to Córdoba, plus another 1.5 - 2 hours to Granada.

I hope you’ve booked your Alhambra Tickets already because the month of September is completely sold out, except for 9/29.

Enjoy your trip!
