Train from Barcelona to Carcassonne

Hi all,

I'm looking at taking a few days from a trip to Barcelona to go up to Carcassonne in August. Not too sure on what train websites to use/trust but it doesn't seem cheap. One search showed the cost to be 700 (for four people), one-way. Does this sound right to you or am I missing something on the train ticket thing?

Best,

Just looking at a random day in August at SNCF, I see a morning train for 558 EUR for 4 people, and a couple of afternoon trains for 462 EUR and 416 EUR. With current exchange rates, the 558 is about $650 US. So 700 (assuming that is USD) is a little high, but not by much. The afternoon trains are cheaper. These all involve a French TGV to Narbonne then an IC or regional train to Carcassonne.

There are probably less expensive ways to do it with a little research.

Renfe, the Spanish train company is less expensive and has a reduced rate ticket for four. So take Renfe as far as Narbonne and in Narbonne take the local TER train to Carcassonne.

FYI: SNCF trains are generally more expensive than either the Spanish or Italian trains when they are both traveling the same route. So if going to Spain, check the Spanish train prices. If going to Italy, check the Italian train prices.
