Hi. I will be booking 1st class tickets via Trainline for travel in February from Madrid Atocha to Seville Santa Justa for my husband and myself. A seat facing in the direction of travel is necessary for him. The train that will probably fit our schedule the best leaves Madrid at 2:00pm and arrives in Seville at 4:43pm. Apparently there are two 1st class carriages. Looking at the map for carriage 1, seats in row 11 through row 7 face one direction and seats in row 1 through 6 face the other. Can I make the assumption that the seats starting in row 1 to 6 will be facing in the direction that the train is traveling? I realize this dilemma may sound odd to some people but it really will make a difference to him. Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

No, you can’t make that assumption. I would reserve seats across from each other at a table. That way you can switch seats if needed. This seating configuration is usually available in second class. Or pick seats that are back to back in rows 6 & 7, and switch as needed based on the direction of travel.
Since my wife also does not like traveling "backwards", we book seats across a table, and switch as need be.
No, you can't make that assumption. Unless the direction of travel is stated there is no way to know it, unless you are familiar with the route. And trains might sometimes be turned around and travel in the opposite direction.
In general it is better to buy the ticket from the company actually operating the train, and they might have more information. So it might be a good idea to have a look at www.iryo.eu or www.renfe.com instead.
Thank you all for your advice. It is much appreciated!!!
