Train & Car question

My wife and I are taking a 2 week trip to Spain the last week in May and first week in June (never been to Spain before). We fly into Madrid (Wed am)and will have 3 days there before taking the AVE to Malaga (Sat) where we have condo for a week on the coast. We will rent a car for the week and do day trips (Granada/Ronda/Gibraltar/Camito del Rey/etc. We will take the train from Malaga to Seville on Sat for 2 days, and Monday take the train to Cordoba (half day visit) and then on to Madrid and leave on Tuesday morning.
I am assuming the best way to book the AVE from Madrid - Malaga is 60 days before and have seen this site and Loco2 as sites easier to book than Renfe.

There are car rentals close to the train station in Malaga, but the best rates seem to be at the Malaga airport (significantly less). Is it easy to get from the train station to the airport via train or bus? Does the AVE stop at the airport? How does one handle tolls with a rental car? Also, is there parking on the outskirts of Granada and then public transportation that we can take into and around town?

We are 65 and would like to take advantage of the Tarjeta Dorada card for train travel. It appears that the train from Malaga to Seville is frequent and we can wait to book that until we get to Malaga. My concern is the trip from Seville - Cordoba - Madrid. It appears that AVANT train is cheaper from Seville - Cordoba and then would have to take AVE from Cordoba - Madrid. Can I wait til I am in Spain to book these 2 trains (perhaps the day we arrive after purchasing the Tarjeta Dorada)? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

1-Forget about the Tarjeta Dorada discount. The Promo fares are better to book in advance, as the have greater discount (70% vs 40%) than Tarjeta Dorada for AVE trains.

If you want to take the advantage of Tarjeta Dorada, you will have to use it only on MD trains and Avant services, as these trains have no promo fares. The Avant trains might be quite busy, but the MD trains aren't very busy at all, and they are a super nice journey. In any case, if you think that the train might be sold out, you can always buy a Tarjeta Dorada at the train station and then prebook online using the Tarjeta Dorada number at www.renfe.com

2-The best way to book online is at www.renfe.com . The website isn't quite bad, just remember that Todas means all stations in a city, and the stops you want is Málaga María Zambrano for the AVE, Avant and MD trains, Córdoba Central for the AVE, Avant and MD trains, Sevilla Santa Justa for the AVE, Avant and MD trains, although if you use MD train from Málaga to Sevilla or Sevilla to Córdoba they also call at Sevilla-San Bernardo, which is a station that has simple connections with the Tram and the Metro Sevilla to go to the city centre (the station is very close). Sometimes the system doesn't like US cards, but that is because the cards must have set up the Verified by Visa or Mastercard SecureCode safety systems that are widely use in Europe online commerce. If it stills doesn't work, create or use a PayPal account, then use the PayPal option to pay at www.renfe.com

3-There is a Cercanías train (commuter train), C-1 line, that links Málaga María Zambrano station with Málaga Aeropuerto. The train is frequent, have a look on Cercanías Málaga renfe website section. This train is free of charge with your AVE ticket (when you buy your ticket at renfe.com it will have a code called Combinado Cercanías, this entitles you to use Cercanías trains in Madrid, to go to the departure station of your AVE train, Puerta de Atocha, and then to use the Cercanías trains in Málaga, wherever you like within Cercanías Málaga network, including Málaga Aeropuerto, up to 3 hours after you arrive with your AVE train). All of this free of charge. You exchange the code for a free commuter train ticket at the respective Cercanías ticket machines. (touch Combinado Cercanías, scan barcode or type the code, then the commuter train ticket gets printed in few seconds)
4-Renfe company sometimes logs the trains onto their system whenever they like, so the 60 day rule is not exact. So everyone keeps checking the website every day until the train is loged. If the train doesn't appear, then wait for tomorrow. If it appears, buy then, as Promo fares are limited and they can be sold out quite fast.
5-Málaga has a Metro (it's more a tram, but they call it Metro). Have a look at their website: https://metromalaga.es/
If you use public transport in Andalucía, buy a Consorcio Card. It can be topped up with credit, and it is valid to board buses, trams and Metros in all Andalucía region, and it can be used to pay for a Renfe MD train ticket at the automatic machines (like a credit card)
6-Tolls in Spain: Manual means notes, coins and credit card. Automático means only credit cards (sometimes is just take the ticket at the start of the toll road, then when you exit, insert ticket and pay). If you want, you can ask the rental car company for a Via-T device, that pays automatically the tolls without stopping.
Few things about Via-T: If you don't have a Via-T in your card, do not enter the roundel blue T lane in a Toll, as that lane is only for those who have a Via-T device (to go faster). If the sign is a squared blue T, that means that you can use Via-T device, but you can also use another payment methods.

Joan, thank you for marvelous information. You have been very helpful. One question - MD trains? Are they the same as cercanas? I'm familiar with AVE, AVANT, and cercanas (sp), but not MD. Thanks.

MD trains are middle distance (Media Distancia in Spanish, I think). Not particularly fast, and I believe their fares do not vary, no matter when you buy your ticket.

Thanks. Another train question. If I am traveling from Seville - Madrid, and want to get off at Cordoba for 4-5 hours, can I purchase an AVE ticket for Seville to Madrid and simply get off at Cordoba? Or do I need to purchase a Seville - Cordoba ticket and then a Cordoba to Madrid AVE ticket?

You can compare fares on the renfe website. When you put in the journey details, check the "tarjeta dorada" box, then when you look at individual trains, you'll see all the prices (there's a drop-down menu in the train details) - promo, full, TD, etc. The discounts for TD vary depending on the type of train and the day of the week. There are plenty of trains between Sevilla-Cordoba-Madrid. I've found it easy to book on the Renfe site, using Paypal if your credit card isn't accepted.

Also check the possibility of dropping the car in Sevilla - it could be a nice day's drive through the hills (and pueblos blancos), even stopping at Arcos for 3-4 hours.

MD is Media Distancia Renfe department. Media Distancia department operates the regional and slower services, that they are compulsory to operate because the Government says so. Inside Media Distancia department, there are 4 kind of services:

  • MD-Media Distancia, service operated with the newer trains (class 449, class 599). It has plugs to charge your phone, and they are very quiet trains. When travelling on MD trains the fare includes an extra for using these new trains (bit stupid, but it is Renfe)
  • R-598,service operated with the not-so-newer trains (class 598).
  • R.EXP (Regional Expres). Stops only at key points. Served with older trains (but older is better, as the seats have a good cushion)
  • Regional or R. Stops at every station. Served sometimes with Cercanías trains (hated by commuters as there is hardly any cushion)
