We are at the beginning stages of planning a trip to Spain and Portugal, and are trying to decide where we would like to go in Spain. We are thinking we would like to base ourselves in Barcelona, taking day trips to a couple of other areas. We would like to find a place similar to Santillana Del Mar (it reminded me of Tuscany), but a town that would be in easy day trip distance from Barcelona. Suggestions?
cadaques, girona, calella de parafrugell are all very nice and within an easy day trip from barcelona. lloret del mar has a nice beach too. there are more old, stone based kind of towns in galicia and leon up in northwest spain, not necessarily in and around catalunya.
tarragona is nice as well. also, depending on your exact travel dates, you could participate in the annual calçot festival in valls, a small town outside barcelona. there are tons of old country farms and vineyards to celebrate the fire grilled spring onions with a big pork roast and lots of wine.
enjoy!
Besalu fits your bill perfectly.

Thank you for your replies, I will absolutely take a closer look at all of those places. They look and sound fabulous, just from the quick peak I took.
