My husband and I will be spending 3 or 4 nights in Girona, in early October. We will have a car so when we leave, we would like to stay at a small hotel somewhere in the countryside, not too far from a main road, so we don't get lost. From there we will drive back to Barcelona, return the car and then take a train to Madrid.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
To clarify- You're looking for somewhere to spend the night en route from Girona to Barcelona?
A bit out of the way (because there's not a lot in the straight, one hour drive), but there are a couple of Paradores a bit north of the direct route:

There are a plethora of options, a small selection:
Costal area - Calella de Palafrugell
Pyrenees foothills - Rupit (my pick)
Medieval hill town - Pals
Wald, Besalu is a beautiful, ancient and unique stone town, about 21 miles north of Girona. I believe their market day is Tuesday, and I understand the market first occurred in the year 1027, pretty old.
By the way, in old town Girona, I loved the Hotel Museu Llegendes de Girona, also the very nice small restaurant (Mimolet) right across the lane, great food and pretty reasonable at lunchtime.
Near Pals is Peratallada. Begur is close to the coast....really there is an embarrassment of riches in the area.
Thank you to everyone who replied to my post. It was all very helpful.
