Have several days between these areas and would like to find a base to travel to many of the small towns, will have a car. There are so many sweet towns I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation or two somewhere in between. Much thanks
Gijon is a nice old town, with an historic fisherman's quarter, marina, beaches, an aquarium and railway museum.
If anyone is interested in motor racing, Fernando Alonso comes from Oviedo, and has all of his cars in an F1 museum there.
Gijón would work. A lot depends on which places you want to visit; along the coast or inland, and how far you’re willing to travel on a day trip.
We stayed in Oviedo to explore along the coast and enjoyed our time there. Cudillero is gorgeous, food is great, people are lovely and we found a beautiful piece of local pottery. It was our favorite Austurian coastal town.
Why not go to Cangas del Onis, and explore that area? The market on weekends is excellent...we saw many people dressed in traditional Asturias clothing..
We spent about 5 nights in the tiny hamlet of Cofino; from there it was easy to drive to Cangas and the lakes beyond, and to the coastal towns like Ribasedella, which is lovely. And Llanes, and Llastres.
