I will be travelling throughout Spain, but I was hoping to tour the Montserrat with my family of four adults. There are choices, for example: one is by "Cog-Train." Can you suggest the best tour company to tour Montserrat and what route is best (bus or cog train?). I understand it takes several hours, so on the 29th of March we will be there all day and it may be the best day for us, hopefully there won't be rain.
Thanks.
The trip to Montserratt is an easy day trip from Barcelona. Did this trip in October, with three others and the help of the Rick Steve's Gude book. Did not feel the need for a guide. Take the train from the R 5 track at the Espanya Station. Arrive early buy your tickets at the track. Here is a link with time schedule etc.https://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/tour/barcelona-montserrat.html
Train may be a bit crowded at first as this is a local train.
At the station you will have to decide if you want to take the cable car or cog train. You buy your ticket accordingly. Make sure it is a round trip ticket. If you go up on the cable car, you have to come down on the cable. We went on an overcast day and it was quite the ride ascending through the crowds.
When you have reached the summit, there are many things to see.
Note if you want to view the Black Madonna, she goes on break during mass in the church. The line will tend to back up at those times. So check the mass schedule.
Bus takes about as long but I am thinking the train is a smoother ride.
Agree with Lynn. You can do Montserrat on your own. Recommend taking the early train from Barcelona before the crowds arrive.
