We will be in Madrid for six days in October and I'd love to have your recommendations for a tour guide for perhaps a 1/2 to 1 day engagement on the front end of our visit to give us an overview, orientation, and help us organize the remainder of our stay. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Get the Rick Steves Spain book. He has several listed for both your cities. Six days in Madrid is about three too many IMHO.
Federico Barroso is your man. He is a RS tour guide of unique excellence.

I no longer have my book but all his books have an index which is organized along the same lines. Look under Tours. That should lead you to a section where they have TI tours, guided tours, etc. and he lists names and contacts there.
Federico was the guide for my RS Barcelona/Madrid tour in May 2019. I highly recommend him as a guide in Madrid.
