Torremolinos or Malaga late October

Hello,
My daughter was recently selected for a travel grant and the opportunity to present at a conference late October in Torremolinos.
Since her boyfriend and bestie will be in class during the time, she asked if I wanted to travel with her.

I just ordered the RS books

Should I stay in Torremolinos or Malaga or somewhere else while my daughter is staying in the Hotel Amaragua with a colleague from her lab in Torremolinos during the conference?

I’ll be working, sightseeing and occasionally meeting her for a meal as time allows. I will be using public transportation.

Suggestions for area to stay and hotels in the Torremolinos or Malaga would be much appreciated. (budget flexible – around 300 euros/night, quiet room with a comfortable bed).

I posted a question in Portugal forum asking for suggestions for Lisbon.

Thank you!

Since you’ll be getting together only occasionally with your daughter, an obvious choice is Malaga only because it has more sights to visit and fewer ex-pats. The downside is you’d need to go back and forth to see you daughter and that could get old quickly. There’s no reason you couldn’t stay in Torremolinos and day trip into Malaga a couple times and maybe visit Mijas or some other small inland town. That’s kind of the best of both options.

Thank you.
I realize it is a question with no right answer and I need to do my research.
I noticed while searching booking.com for hotels in Torremolinos that there were a number of all inclusive resorts and I want to find a quiet(ish) area.

Torremolinos is a purpose built holiday resort popular with the British and other Northern Europeans. It has a lot of large hotels and apartment complexes. I expect it’s good for conferences out of season because there will be a lot of cheap hotel space available. It’s not far at all from Malaga (20 mins on the local train) so it’s very easy to day trip from there.

If I were you I’d stay in Torremolinos so that it’s easier to see your daughter when she’s free, and do some trips around the area by train. Choose a good quality hotel and you’ll have a nice time. The weather should still be pretty mild and the resort won’t be busy. Some things will be shut for the season but they do get visitors all year round.

PS I don’t think it’s even possible to spend €300 a night on a hotel in Torremolinos!

Well, remember that AirBnb is commonly harmful to the local residential real estate economy. You don't have a constitutional right to a full kitchen and a Keurig machine so you don't have coffee with the locals.

I've been to both places - but I'd recommend Malaga. It's a beautiful city with so many things going on. As others have said above, Torremolinos is pretty touristy with lots of English-speaking people looking for a beach vacation with nightife. The beaches are beautiful; but, I'm not sure I'd want to spend more than a long weekend there. Anyway, you'll have fun in either place. Buen Viaje!
