I will be traveling throughout Spain and into France and I’m wondering about the toll road fees. Do you pay by coin or by credit card TIA
Last time I was on a toll road in Spain was 2017 and both forms of payment were accepted. I used the cash or card lane just in case there was an issue with the card. None of the booths were manned; you pay a machine. I travelled around parts of Spain last year for 25 days, mostly in La Rioja, Aragón, Zaragoza, and Castile y La Mancha, and was never on a toll road.
Both options are available, but some lanes are card only and others will be marked for vehicles with an electronic pass only.
I was back in Spain recently for an extended road trip along the East coast, and most of the toll booths were with card only I think, didn't see any other way to make a payment.
Unless I´m mistaken and things have changed, Carlos, that´s not legal in Spain, by law they must have a way to be able to pay in cash, even if just one booth.
Of course, I was just saying that it's not so easy to find, especially if you've got a line of cars honking at you from behind, has everyone pays with card now.
Two years ago in France, I used my credit card for the Toll roads. However, I made sure to have some euro coins just in case. I admit the first one I approached made me nervous because I did not want a bunch of French people beeping their horns at me if my card failed. Luckily, no worries. I did encounter a problem at the filling stations where I could not use my credit card at the pump. I had to go inside to pay. Someone explained to me that the ones at the pump didn't have international internet access. However, as I mentioned that was two years ago and things are probably different. Nonetheless, it's always advisable to carry some cash as a backup. Enjoy your travels!
