With only three days in Madrid, you might find enough local sights without the need for a day-trip.
But if you do want to go out of town, then either Toledo or Segovia are good choices. I prefer Segovia, because I find the aqueduct, alcazar and catedral more interesting. But, equally, I doubt you'd be disappointed by Toledo.
Have you compared sights, because I think it is a personal preference only? Anybody who insists one is definitely better than the other is a fool.
I love both cities, but would recommend Toledo. It is my favorite city in Spain. Next favorite is Seville.
Did the Costa del Sol in the 80s and was disappointed, the beaches were not so wonderful. Perhaps they are cleaner today?
There is no bad choice between those two. My wife and I prefer Toledo.
hard choice! i love both. toledo is more famous i suppose with the cathedral and with multiple el greco paintings to enjoy. segovia was a delightful surprise. the aqueduct is stunning, but i didn't know that the town is home to several amazing medieval churches. in hindsight, i should have spent less time in madrid (6 days) and stayed in toledo and/or segovia for a couple of days rather than do day trips.
We preferred Segovia and did not care for Toledo.
