Toledo-Cordoba, Cordoba-Toledo

I'm in the process of planning our itinerary and am looking into train transportation. I have come upon something that makes no sense to me so hoping it can be explained. By Train:

Toledo to Cordoba is 2 hours and 46 minutes
Cordoba to Toledo is 3 hours and 28 minutes

It seems the train trip should take the same amount of time either way. Does anyone have an explanation for this?
Thanks

Toledo is only connected by rail to Madrid (Atocha station), so any rail trip to any other destination besides Madrid, such as to Cordoba, requires a transfer in Madrid.

So the total travel time can vary depending on how long the transfer time in Madrid is, which will vary. The actual "rail travel time" I would expect to be largely similar (i.e. the time physically spent on a train between Toledo and Madrid and between Madrid and Cordoba) in either direction, unless perhaps they are doing engineering works that only affect trains in one direction.

Thanks. That makes sense. Honestly, the time difference didn't until you explained about the Madrid change.

It varies by time of day, because of that connection time at Madrid.

If you look at a full day’s schedule, you will see that travel time from Toledo to Cordoba varies from 2h 49 min to 3h 13 min.

Travel in the other direction varies from 2h51 min (with a 9 am departure from Cordoba) to 3h 35 minutes (the 9:16 departure from Cordoba). That one has to wait longer than usual for the train to Toledo.
