Although easily navigated alone, if you are considering a tour guide, Adolfo Ferrero is the absolute master of Toledo. It's like walking around town with the mayor.....that guy knows everybody and everything that is Toledo.
I'll be in Toledo in November. What is the typical cost for a private guide?
I was in Toledo for several days around the time of the late-May holiday in 2016. The cathedral was mobbed and there were lots of people on the streets between it and Zocodover Square. I didn't see heavy visitor numbers anywhere else (though I skipped the El Greco Museum). I don't think you need to buy tickets in advance. I bought the multi-entry bracelet, which I know included at least one synagogue. At the time of my visit, bracelet purchasers got free tours at most of the included sights. I found the tours very informative. It was a challenge to find my way between sites quickly enough yo join back-to-back tours. An electronic map is highly recommended.
