to drive or not to drive, northern spain along the atlantic

Hello everyone and anyone,

Planning a trip in northern Spain, along the atlantic coast; roughly from San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostelo. Thinking about driving, but I don't like heights, and so I am curious what the road conditions will be like. Anyone familiar with Highway 1 north of San Francisco, where if you mess up you plummet into the ocean, and the locals pass you on blind corners? :-) Trying to avoid that.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,
I'm more familiar with 1 going south from San Francisco, but ...
I'm also pretty familiar with the route between Bilbao to Santander on the autovia. In general the road is good, the problem is traffic. During the summer there is usually a lot, and it can be pretty slow and go at times. Also there is a lot of traffic leaving Bilbao on Friday and returning on Sunday night.

Have done that route, but trains and buses made it enjoyable rather than an ordeal. Plus you can look out the windows along the route without worrying about watching the road.

I recently drove the eastern portion of that route via the main highway and found it an easy road, aside from a traffic jam near San Sebastian. My memory of bus rides on the western half of the route is that they also are not on a cliff, but closer to sea level.
