To Car or Not to Car in Spain

Back in the Saddle and planning a trip to Spain in October. Y’all are absolutely invaluable for planning so here goes!

We are looking to travel Spain for three weeks this October. This trip is to gauge coming back for a 2-3 month stay later so we are exploring what area we might want to make our base. (Our base won’t be in the middle of the country so I’m trying to explore the coasts but we still want to visit Madrid while we are here.)

We are thinking of starting in Barcelona for four days then heading down East coast. Now, RS travel book goes from Barcelona to Granada but skips the coast entirely. We are thinking we would like to take three days to explore it.
Maybe Barcelona to Valencia first day and Valencia to Almería second day , stopping at sites along the drive.
We also want to see Nerja and Ronda for that third day and stay in Ronda maybe overnight.
Finally heading to Seville to drop off car.

OR….do we just keep the car for the entire trip??

Our next leg is Seville to Madrid to Salamanca (hubby choice not mine) to Lugo to Bilbao then fly out from there to home.
or alternatively we could eliminate Salamanca and go from Lugo (2 nights) to Gijón (2 nights) to Bilbao (2 nights)
*
certainly we could drop the car in Seville and rent another one a week later at the end of our stay in Madrid (use train to travel from S to M)

But how to travel?? A car gives us the advantage of going where we want when we want BUT is parking going to be hassle? Picking up and dropping off? Driving those winding roads??? We are both good drivers and still young enough to feel confident in our skills (but with those mountains I’m going to want an automatic!) but maybe a car is not worth four-ish days if the rest of the trip is public transportation.
I remember in Italy that folks we met who had rented cars were mostly miserable cause so many places didn’t allow cars into the city centers. They had to park way out and some even got ticketed as they did not understand the restrictions. But Spains rail travel from some smaller cities looks slower than buses. So maybe we don’t rent the car and just take buses between smaller cities?

So then my question is can we take a train from Barcelona to some coastal towns then kind of hop on and off or are the trains/buses just too far from the sites on the coast to be worth it?
Like in Cinque Terre and Lake Como, the trains were super convenient to use between smaller towns.

And basically, how easy is it to drive and park in Spain? Whew! Sorry it’s a lot, but transportation and places to stay are the first boxes I like to check off my list.

Certainly we could stick to bigger cities
Barcelona(4) to Valencia(2) to Granada(2) to Seville(4) to Madrid(4) to Salamanca(2) to Lugo(2) to Bilbao(2) and day trip from these.

Oh my! Help :-)

You’re trying to cover a lot with only three weeks and there’s a lot of travel time involved getting to all the places you want to visit. It would be easy to spend three weeks in only one or two provinces. With every place you want to visit there won’t be much time for spontaneous stops.

Lugo is a nice small town not frequently mentioned on the forum. Its Roman wall is nice to walk around. Two nights is about right for it. When we visited there in 2019 we stayed at Hotel Monumental Pazo de Orbán. It right inside the wall and a short taxi ride from the train station.

A rental car works well when you’re visiting a lot of small villages and towns that are not well served by public transportation. Most, if not all, of the places you mentioned are fairly well served by public transportation. How well the bus/train schedules match yours is a whole separate issue you need to research.

I always rent a car, but we seldom visit larger cities any more. Many of the places we visit are not well served by public transportation. Parking is seldom an issue where we visit and the roads in Spain are mostly well maintained. Some extremely rural roads need work. I look up parking lots prior to the trip and bookmark them to Google maps so I can go right to them. Surprisingly, most cities and towns have some free parking lots, but unless you know where they are you probably won’t find them since they are seldom marked.

Great info! Thank you.

Originally our plan was a week in Barcelona, a week in Madrid and a week in Sevilla.

But then I really wanted to see the Basque area and hubby wants to see the South.

So maybe we will do one smaller city in each of those areas instead of multiple.

That would certainly eliminate the need for a car!

Please don't think I'm being mean, but I'm not understanding the rationale for a lot of what you wrote.

First of all, if you are really traveling to Spain with an eye for finding a town in which to spend a few months, which months would those be??

If summer, there's no use in including Andalucia since I doubt if you would want to spend a very hot summer in that region.

If winter, I don't think you'd want to be in Galicia.

So first, what time of year would the lengthy stay take place?

So that's my first question.

Next, if you are serious, for example, about scoping out the Med coast for a base for the future, there is no way in the world that one day's drive from Barcelona to Valencia is going to give you more than a few minutes' drive by or quick walk around a town...and there are SO many possibilities.

And south of Valencia...to Almeria??? Why Almeria? Have you read anything about that city and are you seriously going to think about spending a few months there? Towns that might be suitable are many, all south of Valencia, but you cannot check those out in one day while driving from Valencia to Almeria (the area around Almeria, by the way, is known as the "Costa del Plastico")

You might look at Valencia itself--spend a minimum of three days there. Then there is Denia, where we spent five nights last December and thought it would be superb base for winter (and so do many, many people from Northern Europe and the UK). And Javea. Just that stretch alone would take at least a few days.

And then there's Alicante, a huge winter destination for people from the UK....the city and many suburban areas (those I do not know at all).

So right there, including time in Barcelona, time in Valencia, and the echoing out of towns like Sitges, Tarragona, Castellon, Valencia, Denia, Javea, Xativa, Alicante----all popular winter destinations for foreigners--you've used up two weeks.

And you've not even considered Mallorca or Menorca, which would both be sublime islands for a lengthy stay, in the right time of year.

The other places you mention: Are these for sightseeing or for possible future bases?
Without going into detail, it looks to me was if you have spread yourselves so think that you will have almost no time to actually see much, or less, to relax and enjoy what you are seeing.

Madrid to Salamanca to Lugo????
Why those cities and not, for example, Santiago de Compostela? No Segovia?

Two nights Lugo and then drive to Gijon for two nights? Gijon but not Oviedo? Gijon but nothing along that glorious Asturias coast which would be a dream to spend a few months in the summer......

And then drive from Gijon to Bilbao--no inland Basque areas? No Picos de Europe???

Are these cities mentioned because you've read about them and they might be of interest for a long stay, or because you found things that interest you in those places????

Again, please, please forgive me if I sound critical....I'm just writing here as if I were taking to a friend and do not want to do any harm..it's just that it looks to me like you are rushing willy nilly all over the place without any real plan.

Deciding how to get around: Car or train--is a decision you ought to make after you decide where to go.
Me; When I am remaining in one region, I rent a car, but if I'm traveling from, let's say, Sevilla to Madrid, I'd take the train or fly.

I am not a skilled driver; I live in Manhattan where most of us are either bad drivers or do not even own a car. And I find it very easy to drive in Spain, outside cities. I rent a car on my own at least once or twice a year, when I make trips of about 3-4 weeks alone. I always get a GPS in the car. I always panic at the thought of driving into towns with narrow streets and of finding parking. But it always works out. Sometimes I take a taxi, at night, hen I go to a restaurant.

Wow.
Lot of years on this forum and that was quite the smack down.
Not sure how my transportation questions elicited such a strong diatribe but I hope you are okay.

I appreciate the answer about driving.

I would do some more work in terms of planning and research at the outset here.

  • What are you looking for in a place to stay for 2-3 months?
  • Have you been to Spain? What are your favorite places in Europe to spend time?
  • What are you looking for in terms of weather, attractions, food, etc?
  • What time of year would go?

I think if you narrow down on those things you could do a bit more of a focused trip that doesn't require such an epic road trip.

Great advice. It’s why I love to come to this forum for advice and read RS guidebooks. Good info that I can really use to go back and rethink things. I always come here before we start making reservations and getting tix.
Thank you!!

I am sorry that you imagined I was "smacking you down." I apologized twice in advance, in my long response to you. The first point I made that it would be impossible to decide whether or not a car would be a help or a hindrance if you had not yet chosen an itinerary. How could anyone make that decision before knowing which cities or town they were planning to visit?

Another important issue is when the future extended two-to-three-month- long stay would take place..during which season. (??). I explained why that was important to know.

I was honest, perhaps too honest, In offering my opinion that, for example, taking three days to cover the drive from Barcelona to Almeria and then if I understand correctly, also include both the drive from Almeria and Ronda and Nerja on the third day after leaving Barcelona..... would not be a good plan. For me.

I also questioned why Almeria was in the plan to begin with. if you are going to Almeria I would assume you would be heed for Cabo de Gata but you did not mention this.

I thought that you were putting toward a general plan and hoping for responses as to whether or not that plan seemed sensible to travelers who know the country fairly well. You did seem to be implying that you had more questions than merely whether or not you should rent a car, and I did my best to answer them.

Or maybe I misunderstood (seems likely now that I re-read your post,) and you have your plan already:

Barcelona for four days, and then south along the eastern Mediterranean coast to Almeria, followed by Ronda and Nerja (both of these on the third day after departing Barcelona and, I imagine, stopping to see Valencia and other places that might be good for a longer stay..

And then, from Ronda to Sevilla (not Cordoba or Granada, though) to Salamanca (probably) to Lugo to Gijon to Bilbao, returning home from Madrid.

All of this in three weeks, including the four nights in Barcelona at the start of the trip.
Sometimes it helps to just write down the day by day plan, beginning, in your case if I understand correctly, with:

Day 1-Day 4..Barcelona

Day 5-6 Drive highway close to coast, 3.5 hours. See Valencia afternoon of Day 5. Overnight Valencia.

Day 6. Drive to Almeria (about 5 hours, through the "Costa de Plastico"

Day 7 (third day after departing Barcelona): See Nerja and Ronda. (overnight where, Ronda??)

Day 8 Sevilla..3 overnights?

Day 11 (??)--Five hour drive to Salamanca. Overnight Salamanca.

...and so on.

That's what I do, and it's helpful for me to see the plan in writing.

Perhaps others will chime in with further advice, and be more supportive of your plan than I am.

In any case, I wish you an excellent trip and I do hope you all let us know where you've decided to spend the longer vacation period after you check out the various possibilities on this upcoming trip.

You definitely have to cut one "corner" from your trip: either Barcelona, Andalucia, Galicia or the Basque Country.

I think Galicia is the prime candidate for a cut: higher risk of poor weather by October, and while Lugo's nice enough, the highlight is probably Santiago + the coast, anyway.
But if you travel between Sevilla & Salamanca, it would be a shame to skip Extremadura!

Also, I would consider skipping Madrid: Madrid will not be your future base, but you could easily visit it on your way to/from your future base when you go for a longer trip.

With these hypotheses, a decent route would be, counting nights:

  • Barcelona (4)
  • Valencia (2)
  • Alicante, Elche or Murcia (1)
  • Granada (2)
  • Ronda (1)
  • Sevilla (3) to (4)
  • Cáceres (1) to (2)
  • Salamanca (2)
  • Bilbao (4) incl. day trips

It's a lot of driving, especially along the Med coast, but it is manageable.

Thank you. My husband loves Madrid and I have not been there so we can’t eliminate it.

But all this info is so terrific! I’m reworking our schedule now.

Then I would eliminate Bilbao, and finish in Madrid after Salamanca - passing by Segovia along the way.
Late October can also be marginal weather in the Basque Country anyway.

Are there any towns or cities that stand out now as possible locations for your long-term stay?
