The Rick Steves book mentions buying a ticket in advance but he doesn't say anything about "skip the line ticket"...do you need a tour guide to skip the line? Are the websites offering you skip the line tickets just emphasizing what you would get with a normal timed ticket?

The timed entry is the same as skip the line.
When you buy a ticket online you pick a time to enter and you line up for that.
The really long line is the one to buy tickets if you just show up the day of and did not buy your tickets online.
Look at the official Sagrada Familia website and only buy your tickets there versus a reseller, it will show you all the different options.
