Time needed between train station connection in Madrid

Hello. I'll be taking a train from Salamanca to Cordoba via Madrid. There is no direct connection, so I'll be arriving in Chamartin and leaving from Atocha. Question is how much travel time should I allow myself to get between the two? Is an hour too much? And with luggage in tow, which is more convenient, a train in between the two or taxi?

An hour is fine and taxi is certainly more convenient.

Hi Gabriel,

There are several cercanias trains every hour connecting Chamartin and Atocha, taking about 13 min. The Chamartin-Sol-Atocha lines C3 and C4 are the most convenient and the ride is free with your train ticket from Salamanca to Madrid. There are trains every hour between Madrid Atocha and Cordoba. You do have to go through a security screening on the high-speed AVE trains between Madrid and Cordoba, so I'd allow for at least an hour or possibly two to connect from the Chamartin station.

Rich, thanks for the input. My trip will not be until September, but of all the trains I was searching for on the Renfe site the trains from Salamanca all arrived at Chamartin. It's possible that this was the case because I was only looking at the faster trains from Salamanca to Madrid. I'll search again and see what I can find.

Hola Gabriel,

There are several Cercanías trains that travel the Chamartin to Atocha route & you will have several options depending on what time your train arrives at the Chamartin station.
Travel time is 13 minutes between these 2 stations.

Check this website to see the train schedules: http://www.renfe.com/viajeros/cercanias/madrid/

Here is the map of the Cercanías routes:

Even though the travel time is only 13 minutes, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get oriented at the Atocha Station which is huge.

Here's a map of Atocha's Station: http://www.adif.es/es_ES//infraestructuras/planos/estaciones/plano_60000.pdf

Hope this helps! :-)

You are entitled to a free Cercanias ticket with any high-speed train ticket, so probably both your tickets will allow it. You go to a machine and input the ticket number (it takes a few steps, English is available).
