Time from Barcelona cruise port

Our cruise arrives in port at 6am and our flight to Frankfurt leaves at 8am. Is this enough time to make it on a Tuesday in June. I wonder if we should change our flight and wonder if it will incur a charge

Since 2 hours is a standard recommended check in time for most inter-European flights, I think you should change your flights. Better accept a charge now than show up late, missing the flight, becoming a no-show, and perhaps losing the whole ticket cost.

Sorry, really a stupid idea. First there at least two cruise ports in Barcelona. Even if you were at the close in port you couldn't do it. Depending on the cruise line your departure could easily, under the best of circumstance, take a good 30 to 40 minutes, add a little immigration time, security, etc. and you would be lucky to be at the gate when your plane is rolling down the run way.

I can’t tell you if changing your flight will incur a charge, but I can tell you that you absolutely need to change it.

For example, Princess Cruises port guide states the earliest one should book a flight out of Barcelona airport is 4 hours 15 minutes after arrival.

It took two hours just to get from the airport entrance through security and passport control to our gate when we flew out of BCN.

Fortunately, you do not need to go through passport control for a flight to Frankfurt, but underscores the 2 hour recommendation. 3 hours is the recommendation for a flight to a non-Schengen destination where you must go through passport control.

Unless you are self disembarking (taking your own bags off the ship) you are unlikely to be off the ship much before 8am. Even if self disembarking it will probably be close to 7am before you are off, by the time the ship's paperwork is complete, gangways/air bridges attached and made safe, then you have to reach the airport. Just possibly you will be arriving at the airport front door as boarding closes.
If the ship is handling your luggage it all has to be taken ashore first, and then the ship will determine the series of disembarkation for the probably 2,000 or more passengers on board.

Whether or not it will cost to change your flight is immaterial, your chances of making it are on a spectrum between zero and nil, in my opinion.

Thank you all for your sage advice. We made our own flight arrangements before checking the time frames ☹️.Looks like I’ll be changing flights today!

I hope the flight change goes well and that this doesn't take away from what I am sure will be a wonderful trip.

For further reference, every port will have a time suggested by the cruise line as the minimum time needed from arrival to booking a departure flight. It's fine to make the arrangements yourself, just check those times first.

If its any comfort, I also have a post under the "stupid travel mistakes" thread where I made a flight arrangement mistake as well. It happens sometimes. I'm glad you caught it in time to make what will hopefully be good changes for your trip.

hey hey hhh12
so ecstatic you have change your flight. by the time you got off ship and through passport/immigration, getting your bags off ship you would be waving above to your flight flying high.
does not matter day in june, barcelona is one of the busiest ports, it is very high season for cruises, how many ships are arriving same day with thousands of other cruisers wanting to hurry to airport. been there done that. we usually spend night in city and catch flight next day. we did have stopover flight in frankfurt, it was so crazy. got off plane on runway, took bus to terminal and walked and walked to next gate. had to hold up flight for late arrivals. was not a happy sight and workers were not the friendliest then a long flight back to USA (SFO)
not worth the stress and the craziness.
after learning our lesson, look at flight arrivals and departures, paid more (so worth it). my heartfelt thoughts, paid so much for vacation worth the extra $$$ for later flights. our motto was "will eat rice & beans" when we get home to make up for costs. LOL
not worth scrimping to drive me nuts and worry.

you can check your ship, port for all ports, how many ships in port, how many passengers ( if 5 ships could be 15,000+ in port). we also reserved a local taxi to meet us in port for ride to airport. we did a greek island cruise several years ago and had 5 ships in santorini, another nightmare.
hope all works out for you & your gang, safe travels
thank you san francisco bay area for hosting super bowl
aloha

.. I honestly think you won't make it.

Consider:

  • You're likely to moor at Moll Adossat, which is the farthest port.
  • In June, you're arriving alongside who knows how many more ships, that's thousands of passengers.
  • You need to catch a taxi. Albeit there are 11000+ in the city, it's not going to be easy with so many people arriving at the same time
  • Then you need to get to the airport: it's just 10 miles away, but traffic is dense, especially during rush hour.
  • At the airport, depending on the day, there can be thousands aiming to fly, so lines are unavoidable.
  • Furthermore, the EU has just started to implement a new security system https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees, which will inevitably add delay for first-time users, especially non-EU citizens.
  • Finally, note that boarding in international flights requires being at the airport at least 2h prior.

Unfortunately, not all cruise companies take these nuisances that a local knows into account when suggesting the minimum time needed from arrival to booking a departure flight.

The minimum time fluctuates depending on the day of the year: whether it is a weekday or a weekend, other ships arriving at the same time, major events happening in the city or major ongoing road works (which account for traffic delays), weather (rain=more traffic), etc... In optimal conditions, their estimations can be good enough, but then, life tends to be more complicated, right?

2 hours is way not enough considering the even if your ship arrives at 6am, doesn't mean you will be able to depart then.
We did cruises out of Barcelona and the ship could be late, your group might not be able to depart asap.
I suggest a flight 4 hours after 6am.
Getting to the airport will depend on transport or taxi. Can you book transport in advance, check it out. If you do taxis, you will have to wait in a taxi line.

Carol now retired offers excellent advice. Call the cruise line and ask them what is the earliest flight they would book if you bought your air with them. It’s a good guide. In fact it’s what we just did yesterday and booked our own air accordingly. I can’t help but recall a weird cab experience in Barcelona though not to the airport. We were departing from the ship and I told the driver in passable Spanish our hotel and even gave him a slip of paper with the name and address of the hotel clearly written out. We didn’t get too far when he stopped the cab and explained it was as far as he could go…he didn’t have the necessary permit to drive up La Rambla! Long walk and lesson reinforced: Anything can happen. Allow adequate time.

Ok changing flights to later would have incurred a $1450 additional charge. Rebooking for the next day same 8am flight- no charge- so we’ll enjoy a day in Barcelona, help the local economy and get home a day later. We’ll enjoy ourselves for our 3rd time there, and attend to details better with subsequent travels!

Good to hear. Of course, you never mentioned that the flight to Frankfurt was to connect to a flight to North America. Very good indeed that you changed the flight, and now you can enjoy a day and evening in Barcelona.
