Three months in Spain (actually 12 weeks)

Has anyone spend 3 months in Spain?
If you did, where did you stay and how difficult was it to find a place for that long?

DISCLAIMER: I know about the 90 days restriction within 180 days.

I spent 88 days in Spain in 2016 and about 6 more weeks there earlier this year, but not all in one place. It is a very large country, and I would have been very unhappy to be pinned down in one area for a long time. If you are contemplating seeing the country rather than looking for a retreat where you'll paint, write, etc., I urge you to investigate travel times between key destinations such as Barcelona, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Madrid, Cordoba, Seville and Granada. (And those just scratch the surface.) You can find estimated driving times on ViaMichelin.com and train times on renfe.com.

Acraven,
Our plans are to rent a place to use as a home base, get to immerse ourselves in the culture, take trips to different Spanish locations and other places in Europe as long as it is feasible. We are in the planning stages.

We are doing an abbreviated version of your plan for a month in Valencia, also as home base. We like the phrase “temporary local”. Got the idea from a NY Times article a while ago that touted it as a great destination alternative to the crowds, etc of Barcelona with many of the same (though more modest) attractions. Third largest city in Spain with a long, fascinating history. The more we researched, the more it became our spot.....

Coach,
Did you so VRBO, AIRBNB, booking rooms through websites or a real estate agent?
