We have three free days in Spain in the first part of October. We will be flying into Bilbao and will have a day there. Should we spend those three days in Seville, San Sebastian or Santiago de Compostela. We have never been to Spain and after those three "free" days we head to the Rioja area for a few days and then to Barcelona. Thoughts?
Best to stay in the northern region. San Sebastian is an hour's drive from Bilbao, great food & ambiance. You can even do a day trip into Bayonne, France from there. Seville is in southern Spain, too far if you then must backtrack to Rioja.
San Sebastian is a cullinary capital and you can visit some of the Basque hill towns as well as St Jean de Luz and Bayonne.

Bilbao >> San Sebastián >> Pamplona >> Rioja
Right outside of Santander is the very picturesque medieval small town of Santillana del Mar. If you are in the area, it is a pleasant stop for a few hours.
Or Vitoria-Gasteiz and/or the charming hill town of Laguardia, both in the Alava section of the Basque Country. Laguardia is very close to the Rioja area, I believe.
