Thoughts on train vs. plane for San Sebastian to Barcelona

Colleague is making this journey with teen-aged kids. I recall regretting we didn't fly as the journey was long and not very scenic but that was long ago. Would appreciate recommendations! Thanks.

There is one high-speed Alvia train departing San Sebastián/ Donostia train station at 7:02 am arriving into Barcelona Sants station at 1:09 pm. It is the Alvia #533 train and takes 6:07. If you can get seats on that train, it actually is quite a scenic ride through the Basque Country. You can see availability and prices at www.TheTrainline.com. The one-hour flights out of San Sebastián (EAS) Airport will take about 4 hours by the time you check luggage at EAS, go through security and then navigate the very large airport in Barcelona (BCN) on the other end to
collect luggage and make your way out of the terminal to connect with transit going into the city. EAS is a very small airport and a breeze getting through.
BCN, on the other hand, is a very large airport serving a major city with a metro population of 5.6 million residents and the throngs of travelers who fly in.
