Thoughts on itinerary please

Hello! I am planning a trip for myself, my husband and our 2 young adult daughters. We will be traveling to Spain in July 2024 and have 13 nights. We are flying in/out of Madrid. We will likely stay in airBnBs as they are pretty economical for a family. We mostly want to hit the highlights and know it will be hot and crowded and there will be many places we will not get to on this trip. We love GOT and plan to visit some filming locations. One daughter is way into art, so we will be hitting some museums. Otherwise we just love history, culture, food/drink and want to enjoy but not kill ourselves.

Here are my thoughts on places/nights: (pretty standard itinerary i guess):
Madrid: 3 nights (probably will day trip to Toledo or Segovia)
Seville: 3 nights
Granada: 3 nights
Barcelona: 4 nights (flying home late afternoon last day...planning to take train to madrid in the morning)

Other than general thoughts on numbers of nights, selection of towns, I would like to try to build in a day or two where we are relaxing a little bit. The family tends to get a little cranky and I have found that adding in a little downtime is helpful. Any ideas? I was considering a visit to a spa (a hammam? or is it weird to go there with your family?). I was also considering a trip to a beach town for the day...either as a day trip or possibly taking away a night from somewhere and spending a night in a beach town (maybe from Granada)...although I really try to limit single night or even 2 night stays.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts you might have!

Since you love GOT, then Seville is a perfect stop! The Alcazar is the filming location for Dorn. Oh, if only we could run into Pedro Pascal! Your daughter will also probably like Las Setas- try to time your visit around dusk then go up top and watch the sunset and see the lights go on. It’s pretty amazing. Spent 3 weeks in Spain last spring and we also had the best time shopping esp for shoes! A pair of espadrilles makes the best souvenir!

Barcelona has its own beach so you can plan on a beach day there. Now we were there 10 years ago and my kids still talk about our beach day there. They had vendors walking around offering drinks like mojitos, henna tattoes and back massages! We had all three lol. Not sure if those are still offered but the beaches were great, too!

I also recommend doing a food tour in any of those cities. I did a Devour tapas tour in Barcelona and it was a definite highlight!

Thanks Claudette! That sounds awesome. I am very excited to see Seville. I will have to check out the Barcelona beach...that may be what we are looking for. Do you recall if it is very crowded? And are there chairs/umbrellas and things like that to be rented?

Caceres is a fantastic back door and has a couple GOT film locations right in the middle of town. And if you have a car, you have access to more; including the field where the dragons had their BBQ. That means borrowing a night from Granada and Madrid

Yep, it’s a pretty standard itinerary for first time visitors to Spain. Very workable and you should have a good time.

Lisa we went to the beach in Barcelona 10 years ago so maybe someone else can provide more current info. Back then there were no chair rentals. We just brought beach towels that our Airbnb provided. We were there in late April and there were a lot of people at the beach. Lots of people come to Barcelona for the warm weather. You will see lots of people that should’ve remembered to put on sunscreen 🤣
