the Camino de Santiago

Any drove this route? Looking at driving the route in late April, but we would like to start in Santiago de Compostela and travel to France.

Would this work, and has anyone done this.
Starting our trip in Portugal (Lisbon) and traveling up to Duoro Valley and Porto, then on across Spain.

Are we crazy?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Tgreen! There is a forum dedicated to the camino and they have a section specifically for "alternative transport" to help you with the logistics of driving the actual route.

From what I understand, you can still get snow up in the mountains in April. So plan accordingly if you want to go all of the way into France.

With regards to the "Are we crazy?" We are all a little crazy! To me, it sounds like a lot of driving unless you are going to be in the area for a a couple of weeks at least. But, if road tripping is your thing, go for it. I am sure people more familiar with driving in the area will chime in.

But don't plan on taking a rental car from Portugal to Spain. The drop off fees will be significant.

There are multiple legs of the Camino and I’m not certain which part you want to visit. There is one leg that comes up from Porto and ends in Santiago. This past May I drove the Camino but not directly from St Jean Pied du Port to Santiago. I picked up the Camino in Zamora then up to Leon and over to Santiago. From there we went on to Muxia which is the end for the real die-hards. We then went north to Ribadeo and all the way to Bayonne, France. From there we went to St. Jean Pied du Port, picked up the Camino and followed it all the way to Burgos. If you’d like to know our stops and the route we took, I could send it to you in a personal message.
