Is there a Spain-based taxi app that works well for intercity travel, either in Madrid or Barcelona? I don't know if Uber works in those cities, and how popular/reliable they are there. Thanks again.

Cabify is the best taxi app for Madrid and Barcelona. Uber will also probably work, but Cabify will have more availability and lower prices.
FreeNow is another option specifically focused on the official taxis.
Cabify is my go to.

In Madrid Cabify is a clear option. Not sure if they are so implanted in Barcelona

Regular taxis are the best option in Barcelona, for several reasons. There are several apps among which the one recommended by the Taxi Authority: Picmi Taxi. But there are others: https://infotaxi.amb.cat/demanauntaxi/per-app
Still, if you make your way to any main street, chances are a taxi will come by within a few minutes. They’re easy to spot because all taxis in Barcelona are painted black and yellow—every single one! If you see one coming with the green light on top, just raise your hand and it’ll stop for you.

We will be in Barcelona in late December and staying in an apartment on Pg. de St. Joan in the L'Eixample area. Is it possible to order a taxi, as one would an Uber, to pick us up and take us to Plaça d'Espanya? I hope I'm not hijacking the OP's thread, but this might be pertinent to them, as well. Gracias!
