Tarragona lodging recommendation?

I'm still putting together my spring east coast of Spain itinerary, and wanted to see if anyone here in the forum has some recommendations or testimonials for good lodging in Tarragona -- I would lean towards historical character and central location with easy transit access over modern design and amenities.

As I mentioned a while back, I'll be starting in Valencia to be able to be there during Las Fallas and also do some side-tripping, then work my way up to Barcelona with a stop-off in Tarragona. I'm a knockover when it comes to Roman ruins, so I think Tarragona will keep my attention for at least two nights.

thanks for your input!

Living 'here' and not being in the tourism industry makes my potential recommendation on lodging very irrelevant, however, since you mentioned your passion for everything Roman I'd like to share some sites that might interest you and that you might or might not considered already:

  • The Festival of Tarraco Viva (Catalan for 'Tarraco Alive') held in May. It's a real gem. Tarragona (former Tarraco), as you possibly know was the capital of the biggest most western province of the Roman empire for several centuries and accordingly its ruins and remains, many of which have been very well preserved, present an excellent opportunity for better understanding the Roman culture, possibly right after the city of Rome itself. More info here, and video here.
  • The remains of Roman Barcelona at the MUHBA located underneath the Medieval heart of the city at the Museum of History of Barcelona, in Plaça del Rei square.
  • The ruins of Empúries in Costa Brava, north of Barcelona -not Roman but a tad older, from the Greek colonisation of Catalonia, but possibly equally interesting to you as per their size, conservation and importance in Western Mediterranean development.
  • Next June, at the area around Creu Coberta street in the neighbourhood of Sants, west of the city, the Fira Romana (Roman Fair) will be celebrated for the sixth time. The official name is "VI Barcino·Colonia·Romae" and it's organised by the Association of Small Businesses of the area in cooperation with the City Hall and the Museum of Archeology. It's a sort of an open air market in which visitors can taste Roman dishes, see performances, attend conferences and impregnate in the life of a typical day in Barcelona during Roman times. But be aware that it's a rather humble fair and the main purpose is to educate the general public -especially children- so if you're nerdy on the issue it might not suit you much.

For a complete list of Roman sites in Catalonia check this wikipedia page. It's in Catalan -the local language- but Google Translate will work wonders ;))

You might also want to contact this TripAdvisor member, Oriolense, who is a local of Tarragona and very passionate about his city, since I'm sure you might profit from his advice.

If anything, regarding lodging, you might like to check a place near the maze of small streets and back-alleys in the Old City located between the Cathedral and the Roman amphitheatre and which happens also to be the 'highest' point of the city. Check this map.

Enjoy!

Many thanks for these pointers!

I am definitely looking to stay in the area between the amphitheater and the cathedral.

Iberia was crucial to the Rome's strength and successes, and I look forward to learning more!

I am so excited you are going to Tarragona! You will love it. We were looking for a one night stay between Barcelona and visiting a friend in the Priorat wine region. I happened to find a blog written by a young man from England who was crazy for the festivals in Tarragona. His passion for the town and the people, led me to select it over Reus. My husband and I also stayed at Hotel Plaça de la Font in 2014. I had done a lot of research and the hotel was a good price, friendly staff, comfortable, basic rooms, and the front rooms have small balconies overlooking the square. Splurge for a room in the front; the doors are double pane so you won't hear any noise. Good location close to the cathedral, roman ruins, the rambles, the forum and the remodeled Mercat. We went to a baker, Jordi Andreu - Carrer de Lleida, 21, who took over the bakery from his father, celebrating 114 years this year. His circular oven, was a unique delight to see. Located near the Mercat Central and across from the forum.
We enjoyed dinner at Almosta restaurant, off the Placa del Forum. The Cathedral is one of the most interesting churches we have ever visited in Europe with numerous side altars. You will have a wonderful, enjoyable time in your 2 days in Tarragona - it is one of the most enjoyable cities in Europe for a 2 day stay. This is very encouraging, thank you --
as I finalize my plans, I'm trying to stick to my own interests rather than give in to what makes sense conventionally --
right now it looks like I will be in Valencia for Las Fallas and stick around awhile afterwards,
then spend some of semana santa in Tarragona,
then hopscotch over Barcelona temporarily to spend a couple of nights in Gerona,
then come back to Barcelona for the big city experience, with a side-trip to Montserrat.

As I'm doing my reading, I can't help but think that Gerona is to Barcelona as Toledo is to Madrid,
and I really think Toledo has enough to see and do that it's worth extra nights, so I'm thinking similarly
that I would give up a night in Barcelona for an extra night in Gerona ...
