Tarragona

We will be taking a day (perhaps overnight) trip from Barcelona to Tarragona. As well as visiting the Freixenet winery, we would like to tour around the city. Is it reasonable to expect we can do all this without a car? Any suggestions about what to see, where to eat, and possible place to stay overnight would be helpful too. Thanks

Last summer we took a day trip to Tarragona from Barcelona. We thought that we'd wing it and show up at the train station and get to see the ruins and the other sites. It turned out to be a really hot day and we walked and walked without seeing any of the Roman ruins that we hoped to see. Finally we made our way back to the train station, jumped in a cab and asked the driver to show us some stuff. The aquaduct is quite a distance away from the city center. You'll need a car if you'd like to see it, but it is impressive. If I remember correctly, you have to take a highway about 15 minutes, park, then walk into the woods a bit. The other stuff is great -- and once you're in that part of the city, you can walk around and see the ruins. And it's not really that far from the train station. Up the street and up the large stairs. Beautiful views there, too. Have fun!

Sorry, the other Roman ruins are in the city center. Walking distance from the train station. My last post was a little vague about that.
