Hi, I found an old post from 2015 that mentioned this card, and would like to know if it’s still a good thing to get, and if we can get it at the airport upon arrival. If you’ve used it, were you able to use for the metro trains, or is this only for long distance travel? We plan, from Madrid, to visit Toledo, Cordoba, Malaga and return to Malaga to fly back home. Would appreciate some recent feedback. Thanks!
Ginger,
The Tarjeta Dorada is a discount card, for anyone over the age of 60, and it’s only valid for train travel but not for the Metro.
You’ll find all the details about it here: Renfe.com/descuentos/mayoresde60
When is your trip?
You may be able to book discounted train tickets ( medium & long distance) when booked way in advance (3 - 4 months) without the TD.
The train ticket from Madrid to Toledo does not need to be booked in advance as its price does not change.
Will you be visiting Granada from Malaga?
Do book your Alhambra tickets as soon as your dates are set.
Enjoy your time in beautiful Spain!
Thank you! We are heading to Spain on May 1st.
It is probably a flip of the coin whether it is worth the effort and hassle. For limited travel, you can save as much by buying tickets early, the senior discount is off the full price of tickets, not a discounted rate.
So on the spot ticket purchases might still be lower than the TD?
On-the-spot ticket purchases will probably be at or near the full fare, so a Tarjeta Dorada will be worthwhile in that situation.
Thanks everyone.
