Maybe Rick was in a car when he did it, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to make this connection. Getting to Gibraltar is fine, but how to get to Nerja then is unclear. Any help would be outstanding.

The best summary is on p. 820 in the Malaga section. Buses between La Linea de la Concepcion and Malaga are run by Portillo and from there to Nerja says www.alsa.es, although I could not get a schedule from them; there is at least one departure operated by Portillo at 17:00. Reconfirm bus schedules locally as you go.
