We are taking the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier for a day trip with a guide in late June. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions for streamlining the experience? We are using a highly rated guide for our group of 5.
I'm not sure what you're looking for but will remind you that you should go early to line up for Spanish exit stamps at the Tarifa ferry terminal, that you must get the Moroccan entry stamp while onboard the boat, and that there is a time change between the countries. If you have Rick's Spain guidebook, then the same info is in the Tangier chapter.
Hi Jon and Laura -
We, too will be going to Tangier for a day trip come October (2016) and would love recommendations for a guide. We have used Tours By Locals in the past with wonderful experiences. That said, I am looking for recommendations because we got such a great one for Moscow a couple of years ago.
One wrinkle - we will be traveling with my sister who has MS, and she may or may not accompany with us. We need to be prepared if she does come, but also have our own "version" if she doesn't.
Can you give me some ideas as to who might be reliable? Or, should we stick with Tours By Locals (and they are great)?
Could use some advice here.
Thanks.
Liz
We had a wonderful experience in Tangier. Local guide Aziz Begdouri spent 2 days with us and we saw more in 2 days than we could have in a week. He's funny, kind and knows every nook and cranny in the area. My wife is a weaver and had specific requests to find silk thread. Not only did Aziz find a place that sold a rainbow of colors, but he took us into the weaving CENTER of Tangier. Amazing sights...weavers young and old...looms large and small...each tiny room a beehive of weaving activity. Aziz knows everybody and everybody knows Aziz. His driving alone was worth the price of admission. If I tried driving in Tangier, we'd spend hours lost in a maze.
Also stayed at Le Maison Blanche which he and his wonderful wife run to perfection! Hope to get back sometime soon to see what else Aziz has in store!
We went to Tangier yesterday, so I'll add just one thing. If you have a confirmation number for the tix you have purchased, visit the ferry office the night before to pick them up. At FRS we needed our passport to retrieve them. Besides the tix you'll get the Moroccan forms which you can fill out the night before instead of being rushed while on the ferry.
I'll second the vote for the services of Aziz or his reps.
Have a great trip.
Galen-Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately we will be arriving in Tarifa the morning of our ferry. If we have our passports with us when we pick up the tickets at the FRS office will we be ok?
Sure. You need the passport of each person traveling when picking up tickets. When FRS gave us the tickets they also gave us almost identical, small forms--one white and the other yellow. You'll need to have them filled out before you get to the Moroccan official on the ferry. (When exiting and re-entering Spain you just use your passport; no other forms necessary.)
Enjoy!
