Tarifa, End of September, Parking. Visit to Tangier.

Part of our one month driving tour includes a visit to Tangier. Our initial plan would be to spend the night in Tarifa, catch a ferry over the following morning, spend the night in Tangier and return later the following day.

Can anyone recommend a hotel where we may be able to (safely) leave the rental vehicle while we are gone? I had looked at some of the hotels closer to the port, but parking appears very limited or non-existent.

Also, any recommendations for tour companies to Tangiers? Have checked out FRS (they are offering a 2 day/1 night package).

Thanks

We actually drove from Sevilla to Tangiers to catch the first ferry out. We used Rick's recommended tour guide, Aziz Begdouri, and have recommended him to others since. Truly a special day in Tangiers. His info is in the guidebook, if you need it, let me know.

We took the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier two years ago and stayed for two nights. We parked our rental in the parking lot right next to the ferry building. It is a small lot, but we found a space in July, so I'm sure late September would be easier. The spaces are narrow, so I worried a bit about door dings (our rental was a BMW in very nice condition so I was paranoid about any damage) but it was perfect when we returned. There is a guard and gate going in and out of the lot.

Thank you both for the information. This brings up a few more questions..............

  1. Should we go with a tour guide or leave it to our own devices?
  2. What is the average cost for a guide for one day?
  3. Any hotel recommendations. Would like something with a local flair, instead of a large chain.

Thanks in advance.

A local guide is a good idea in Tangier, and a great compromise is to hire one of Aziz Ben-Ami’s staff for a half day, so you can wander on your own after you have the lay of the land. We paid €60 for two of us for a half day, and we were glad we did.

For local flavor with a big serving of nostalgia, we picked the Hotel Continental, which is storied but a lot like a washed-up movie star (think Florence Foster Jenkins) You can imagine Hemingway there, but you can also see that there’s been precious little upkeep since then. Still, it’s right by the ferry terminal and handy to the old city. Enjoy!
