We are two American ladies age 63 and 61. In Oct 2017 we will be in Costa del Sol and want to go to Tangier. We have watched Rick Steves video and feel that since Mohammed VI has become president that we can safely take the ferry over and see the old city on our own. The tours look way too commercial, contrived and not authentic. We want to wander streets, shop, see craftsman, eat local food and people watch mainly.
We would like to hear from other ladies who have done this on their own and what their experiences were.
TIA.
My husband and I took a day trip to Tangier in January. We decided to hire a guide for the day, and we're glad we did. We used Aziz Benami (a RS recommendation), and were happy with his service. There are many touts, especially as you exit the ferry terminal, and being with a local guide made it much less likely to be bothered by them.
You can contact Aziz via email and let him know what your interests are (for example, we did NOT want to ride a camel!). You can choose a private tour (as we did), or can join with others. Half day/full day, with driver, etc. They pick up and drop you off at the ferry terminal. You can have lunch included, if you choose.
I feel that navigating the souk and medina on your own is possible, but you would get so much more out of the day with a local guide.
thank you for reply Deborah. We will look into having personal guide for several hours.
You might try toursbylocals.com We had a great experience recently in Russia with this company. Particularly if a private tour is available, the guide will accommodate your interests. The first thing we told our fellow as "No shopping". Our guide modified his itinerary to meet our needs. It was easy working with this company, we emailed our guide in advance to describe our interests and had several communications before meeting up.
