My family with two teens will be traveling to Spain from New York at the end of this month. We are scheduled to land in Madrid at 9:00 a.m. on a Friday. Hotel check-in is 3:00 p.m., so we'll likely be looking to fill some time but also probably be tired from our overnight flight. Any suggestions for a low-key activity that could fill some time either near Atocha train station (where we'll arrive) OR near Puerta del Sol (near our hotel)? I assume that if we go to the hotel they could hold our luggage (will confirm), or maybe we'll get lucky and can get in early. Is it possible to check luggage at Atocha? (We are only bringing carry-on suitcases.) I have the Prado and Royal Palace already booked for later in our trip.
There aren’t many attractions near Atocha that I’d want to visit after a long flight and not knowing my way around. Getting from Atocha to the Puerta del Sol is a 15-20 minutes walk. That would occupy some of that extra time. Most hotels will hold your luggage until you can check in. If a hotel wasn’t mostly booked the previous night it may be possible to check in an hour our so early, but not 3-4 hours early.
Near the Puerta del Sol there are places where you can get something to eat, e.g, El Riojano or Chocolatería San Ginés, Mercado de San Miguel. There are of course other places. That area is a large shopping area with plenty of shops. The Plaza Mayor is only a couple minutes walk away.
From the airport we always take the metro to the Sol station. That requires two train changes.
I'm pretty certain your hotel would hold your. luggage until the room is ready; I've never been to a hotel that would not do that.
But the first thing I would do is to write to the hotel and let them know you will be arriving on an overnight flight from New York, and BEG them to allow you to check in early. They won't likely have your rooms ready upon your arrival but they could have them ready hours before 3am if you ask nicely and get lucky. Or they might make one room available.
This just happened to me in Barcelona, after my flight from the US arrived at the airport at 6:45am; I was tucked into bed in my room before 10am.
I was going by the RS recommendation to take the express bus from the airport to Atocha, but maybe getting right on the Metro is our better bet (even with two transfers - we are generally pretty good at navigating urban transportation systems). Then we can go right to Sol and the hotel to drop luggage. Just wandering around will be fine, if that makes the most sense. We will contact the hotel about early check-in. We lucked out on that in London and got in around noon for a similar 3:00 p.m. check-in time and it was great.
Retiro Park (free) and the Botanical Garden (entry fee) are both relatively near Atocha Station.
It's a rare fully-staffed hotel that will not store luggage for early-arriving guests. You can't be sure it will be possible at places advertising "private check-in" and the like. They are saving money by not having staff readily available all day long.
I check into a lot of European hotels every year, and I quite often can get into my room if I arrive at 10:30 or 11 AM. I think it happens at least half the time. It's the luck of the draw--was a room of the type you booked empty the previous night?
If your hotel is near Sol and you are comfortable on public transport (which it sounds like you are), and
- You are arriving at Terminal 4 -- I wouldn't do the express bus to Atocha, but would take the Cercanías instead, which would only require one transfer -- line C-1 from the airport to Chamartín, and then transfer to either C-3 or C-4 (whichever is coming first) to Sol.
- If you are arriving at Terminals 1/2/3 -- I would do the Metro, since the Cercanías station at the airport is at T4 but T1/2/3 <> T4 at Madrid airport requires some sort of shuttle, so you might as well just take the Metro straight from the Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 station.
From Puerta del Sol, you can walk to Retiro Park in about 20 minutes, or you could walk to Plaza Mayor in 5-10 minutes and from there to Plaza Santa Ana in another 5-10 minutes. There are many places to eat or have coffee, people watch, see a few landarks in each plaza and between them.
This is all really good info. Thank you! Retiro and the Botanical Gardens were on my list if we were going to try to kill some time by Atocha, but I'm thinking it will probably just be easier to head straight to the hotel and then see what happens from there.
That's what I would do.
Or you could take a hop on hop off bus for an orientation tour (stop at Sol).
Hello,
The park and botanical garden are a wonderful way to begin your trip!
As far as getting to your hotel......with 4 of you, I would recommend just taking a taxi straight to your hotel. Simple, quick enough, and a pretty darn good bargain when tired.
I think a free walking tour is easy to do while tired and will help you get your bearings. The guides usually offer some helpful tips along the way. By the time it’s over, have lunch and it’ll be check-in time.
I'd definitely head to the hotel to drop the bags and see about an early check-in. That gets you probably close to 11 am - landing, luggage, immigration, heading to the hotel, etc. - and, assuming the weather is nice, a great time to get out and reset your inner clocks to Madrid time.
The RS guide book (and the audio tour app) have the Madrid Walk that starts/ends in Puerto del Sol ( map: https://d3dqioy2sca31t.cloudfront.net/Projects/cms/production/000/021/565/original/72be2e8617cf79dbe8673b066861aa7a/map-audiotours-madrid-city-walk.pdf ), but I also think there was a walk in the book that took in the Retiro park and guided you up one of the main roads (Jeronimo, I think) back to Puerto del Sol. I generally find the RS walks relatively easy going, and you could tick one or two off while getting a gentle bit of exercise and sunlight exposure.
