suggestions for northern Spain

We only have 3 1/2 days in northern Spain after arriving in Barcelona. Oct 1-4. WE will have just come from Rome so our preference is spending more times in smaller villages or rural areas outside of Barcelona. Recommendations appreciated.
Thank you!

That’s not much time. Depending on how you’re getting around consider the areas by Vic or Rupit. Otherwise, look at the Costa Brava and towns along it.

I highly recommend Girona (1 hour north of Barcelona by car, 40 minutes by train). We stayed for 3 nights in the summer of 2022 and loved it. We did a walking tour booked directly with Girona Experience, which was wonderful. There is a Cathedral and a Basilica, a nice (small) art museum, perfectly preserved walls that you can walk and lots of small cobbled streets to wander. There are day trip tours from Barcelona if you are staying in the city but want to spend the day in Girona.

For a tiny village, I can't say enough about the Town of Besalu. (I'm not sure of train service, but it is a 20 minute drive from Girona). This tiny medieval village is so picturesque and full of history. We did a walking tour organized by the village and hiked along the river and surrounding hills the next afternoon. The main plaza is small and ringed by several restaurants-nothing really outstanding, but good meals and a cute ice cream shop. We had dinner one night at Curia Reial, a 5 minute walk from the plaza. It was divine and had the most beautiful sunset views.

Consider Sitges.
Beach town just 28 minutes south of Barcelona via the R2sud commuter rail.
We loved our 3 days there.

Barcelona is South and you want to North? Or do you want to stay South?

Well, most people in Barcelona think they are "North" in Spain, though not the North coast as in the Basque region.

But anyway, there are some nice coastal towns both directions from Barcelona. If interested at all in Salvador Dali, there is Figueres that has a nice museum, then on the coast is Cadaques, a nice town for a few days, with Dali's house not too far from there in Port l'Ligat.
