Our family of four (kids are 15, 13) will have two nights and one full day in Madrid in July at the end of a three week European trip.
We will likely be booking via airbnb or homeaway.
Can anyone recommend a favorite neighborhood to stay? We want to be in position to get to the airport easily on our final day.

There is a fixed rate of €30 from the center of Madrid to the airport (the "center" is defined as a rather large area for this fixed fare), and with four people, that's the way I'd go.
I stayed in a hostal (which is not a hostel; it's a small hotel or pension) north of the Puerta del Sol and south of the Grand Via, which was convenient for many things. The Madrid Metro is very efficient and taxis aren't expensive, so wherever you stay wouldn't be a problem for sightseeing.
My favorite neighborhood is La Latina. Lots of tapas bars and the Tirsa de Molina Metro stop will take you directly to Atocha for the bus or cercania to the airport.
Make sure your rental has air conditioning.
