Suggestions for extended days -Best of Spain

We like to spend a day or two either before or after the Best of Spain trip this fall. Any suggestions? We like museums and historical sites. We can walk 3-4 miles a day. Any towns or locations that can be reached by public transport will be ideal since we don't plan to drive.

Not sure where you are flying into or out of, so I’ll throw out Cáceres, Cuenca, Zamora, León, Burgos, Santiago de Compostela and Zaragoza as possibilities. Each is worth a couple days. For an even smaller town, I’ll suggest Lugo.

We spent time on the Costa Brava north of Barcelona and based in Begur, a beautiful area on the water.
There are also the small cities of beautiful and historic Girona and Figueres with the wonderful Dalí Museum to visit; both are north of Barcelona.
Cordoba is located between Sevilla and Madrid. La Mezquita, a combination of a mosque and a cathedral, is one of the world’s treasures and is located in Cordoba. This smaller city would be a good choice for several extra days. And then you can take the train directly to Madrid to fly home.

BoS starts in Barcelona and ends in Sevilla. I noted it skips Cordoba, which is a snap on a fast train, particularly convenient if you are flying out of MAD. Close to Barcelona, I'd put Tarragona and Zaragoza on the list. Of course, more time in Barcelona or Madrid would be easy to fill.

I agree with visiting Cordoba. The cathedral there is so unique and worth a trip. It is a small city but very easy to walk around, not too hilly. The patios are beautiful to see with their plants. Also, we attended a horse show which was fun.

I got to Barcelona several days before the tour, and I was glad I did. With only one full day in Barcelona, the tour just scratches the surface. After the tour, I spent one more night in Sevilla, then two nights in Cordoba, then several more in Madrid before flying home. The added time in Madrid was very welcome.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom. We have decided to extend three days before and three days after the RS tour. With all the wonderful suggestions by everyone, it is easy to spend a whole month or more just for Spain. But for us, home is calling after three weeks or so being tourists.
