Stiges or Tarragona?

We will be driving from Barcelona to Valencia in July as part of a 17 day trip. Would like to break up the trip with a stop in either Stiges or Tarragona? (or both) Which would you suggest?

Hello! I don't see why one couldn't stop at both, although personally I have not found Sitges very appealing, even more so now that it is inundated with daytrippers from Barcelona, I read somewhere on any given day during the summer, 30-40% of the population are from out of town. I've always thought of it as the "Ramblas of beach towns", not my type of scene. Thusly, I have have always steered more toward smaller local beach communities like Garraf, if beach time is what you are after.

If you are more interested in history Tarragona should do the trick, although not terribly picturesque, consider also stopping at the charming historic town of Peñíscola, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, the old town sits on a big rock that juts out into the sea. The town is dominated by a large Knights Templar castle.

Hope this helps, sorry for the Spanish bluntness :)

Hi Lisa,

I suggest Tarragona and Alicante Spain as stop off points during your trip. Both cities have alot to see and offer. You can make your trip even more special by including these 2 cities.

Tarragona is much more interesting as a town to visit on the way to Valencia. Sitges has a few sights, but it's mostly a beach town and I would assume it would be packed in July, as are all beach resorts in Spain.

I've been to Tarragona and it's a good stop to see the Roman ruins and excellent museum on Roman archeology. Are you thinking of staying overnight? We did and it was ok, but not up to par with stays in Barcelona and Valencia. With a car you might just visit and move on to stay somewhere else.

Thank you all for your responses. WE will probably stick with our original plan to stop in Tarragona.
