Should I expect restaurants and retail shops to be closed on St. Joan's Day?
We're doing the Spanish Civil War Walking Tour in the morning, but don't want to visit Park Guell until after 6pm (less busy and maybe cooler?), so were thinking of eating a nice lunch and doing some clothes shopping in a more "local" shopping district, but am concerned if it's less touristy, there may be less open.

Which day are you talking about? June 23 or June 24?
June 23 is the big celebration day, and June 24 is the actual Saint day, which is also a public holiday so many businesses will be closed on that day and most residents will stay quietly at home.
