Spring 2017 in Spain

Dear travel community,

Greetings!

We (3 adults + 2 kids) are traveling to Spain for the first time (April) & are very excited!

Q1: We intend to take a day trip to Toledo from Madrid. Is it advisable to take a tour package from Madrid or should we explore the beautiful city on our own?

Q2: Which is the best & most affordable Flamenco performance in Madrid?

Appreciate your advice.

Thanks in advance.

For Toledo, take the train and a guide book. Easy to see on your own.

If you are going during Easter Week (Semana Santa), check the schedule for Toledo. There will be processions, which draw huge crowds. You may need to buy train tickets well in advance, instead of the usual 2-3 days. Toledo is one of my favorites cities and really should be an overnight stay - or even 2 nights.

Be careful of your timing in Toledo if you hit a day with a major procession. It is possible to find yourself cut off from the part of the town that give access to the bus and train stations.

Thank you gentlemen.

Re Renfe tickets from Madrid to Barcelona - Are there special discounts for tourists? I understand there are discounts for children. How about adults?

Thank you,
Ashley

There are early-purchase discounts in the sense that when a train first opens for booking there are some real bargain fares, then those disappear as other travelers buy them, and only the higher-priced tickets remain. Take a look now on the Renfe website and you may see some price variation for the day you want to travel. You should assume that the lower-cost tickets could disappear at any time. Check fares for late today or for Thursday. The highest price you see is probably the maximum you can expect for an April trip.

There is also the Tarjeta Dorada, a card that provides discounts to senior travelers. I don't remember whether the qualification age is 60 or 62. I believe you are younger than that.

I don't know what might be available for children, but the website asks for separate head counts for travelers under 4 years old and those 4 - 13.

Go to Toledo on your own with the RS Spain travel guide! We loved the Flamenco performance we attended in Madrid and found it by wandering around - just use your own judgement/gut and have fun.
