Spanish Pyrenees base towns day hikes

Hi Forum Travelers,
An older couple and adult daughter seek base town ideas for day hikes (strolls to around 1500 ft elevation gain and/or lifts to awesome ridge or other hikes). We seek a town with local charm, history, and tasty restaurants. We will have a car. Thanks. Nancy in Seattle

Also when?

Elizondo, in the Baztan Valley, Navarra might fit your needs. The town is at about 700ft, lots of charm and the food is good. The valley is full of hiking routes, there are some larges caves you can visit, a charming waterfall that is a short walk, etc. The Navarra Toursim page for the Baztan.

To the east of Elizondo is the mountain pass of Izpegui. While it is a bit higher than you like (about 2200ft) there are some restaurants there with great views of the Pyrenees and the valleys down below.

Some friends of ours did a day hike in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park Parque. While there they stayed at Edelweiss Hotel Ordesa Torla, Torla-Ordesa.
