I am planning a two-week trip to Spain from the very end of July to mid-August. I plan on going to Madrid and Salamanca (I will struggle through Madrid's heat) but I don't know which other city to fit in. I have traveled through Andalusia before and I also want to avoid the heat as much as possible. I am looking for suggestions more northern. I enjoy nightlife and want a place that is still alive and buzzing even though I know many locals go on vacations in August. I am in my twenties traveling with my partner and we want a fun atmosphere without paying crazy prices. Thoughts??
I’m beyond the nightlife phase, but for cooler places with a nightlife, consider León, Burgos, or Logroño. I’d normally suggest Zaragoza, but in August it will be hot. I’m sure there are other equally nice places.
Our 20 something year old son went to Billbao last August to visit friends, and it coincided with the festival Semana Grande, but your dates may be too early. He said it was alive and buzzing that week. They also went to Ibiza (party) and Formentera (quieter), which aren't northern.
San Sebastian
Head North, along with everyone else. The Basque region, including Bilbao and San Sebastian; the Asturias region; and Galicia.
Second the Basque region — Bilbao, San Sebastion, Hondaribbia and, if time, on into France.
Santiago de Compostela
It is 10°C cooler than Madrid now.
