Spain train tickets bought at Renfe.com and change at train station?

Fellow travelers or destination expert:

I am planning a train ride from Cadiz to Seville, and
I am considering to buy the train tickets in advance at the Renfe.com website.
Yes I heard about that it is difficult to use and with issues etc.

The advice I received is to buy the tickets directly from Renfe, if I may need to change the tickets.

(1)
If I want to change the tickets on the day of travel,
The change is only to an earlier departure,
how easy/difficult it is to do it at the train station?

Is there something particular I need other than the printed ticket?

Can I make the change in the ticket machine at the train station?

(2)
For those who have registered at the Renfe.com website,
do you know if using driver license number instead of passport number is ok?

(3)
For passenger information, one of the box is passport/docu comunitario. Thus
instead of passport number, it is ok to provide driver license number instead?

(4)
If you have traveled from the Santa Justa train station to the Real Alcazar by taxi,
how much was the fare? And did you pay by credit card? If you traveled between 1100 - 1200
how was the traffic?

Thank you

FJ

RENFE is the only train operator in that area, therefore, you can only travel with RENFE.

1) Whatever change you might want to do you'll have to do at the manned booths. Consider the language barrier -albeit lots of people speak English (sort of, anyway), not everybody does, also consider the queues you might encounter... so if you feel you need to exchange, do so with pleeeeenty of time.

2 & 3) For US citizens visiting, the DL is NOT a valid ID form, only your passport is. This does not mean that a website asking for the DNI/NIE (Spanish ID card for national residents and for non-national residents) could/would not necessarily accept your DL number -the dumbness of a computer!-, but if the worst was to come once your in Spain, you would be asked to produce the passport... and that wouldn't match the number indicated in the website. European DLs are also another form of valid ID because they're harmonised (hence, recognised) among the EU members, but it's not your case.

4a) Around 10-12€, give or take.

4b) It's fairly easy to pay by ccard, but I am not sure all taxis necessarily accept it. In some big cities (ie Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Madrid...) the regulation requires all taxis to accept ccard payments, but I am not sure Sevilla is one of them.

Enjoy!

Hello Enric,

Thank you very much for your detail information!!!

FJ

PS:
When I bought out Alhambra tickets, I used our driver licenses.
Hopefully, when they check our ID at the gate, they would accept our DL.
Or perhaps we should bring our passports with us as well.

It's unlikely you're going to be needing it, but I would take both, just in case.

Generally, there are three types of RENFE tickets. Full fare which are fully changeable and refundable. Full discount which cannot be changed or refunded. And an intermediate fare which can be changed but not refunded. Others can confirm if those tiers are still in effect and you may not always see the discounted fares if they sell out. So be sure you buy a ticket that can be changed.

Ticket lines can be quite long at the major stations. Plan to wait in line as much as 60-90 minutes depending on what day, place and time. The big stations usually have separate lines for day of travel and advance travel.

Is there a reason you won't add your passport number?

Douglas,

Thanks for your information. Yes, I have checked and found that the tickets are exchangeable.

The reason I do not want to enter my passport number is that I will have to carry it with me, in case I am asked during ticket inspection.
During daily outings in overseas, I rather bring a driver license with me, if possible and if necessary.
My concern is that if I lost my passport, then it is much more troublesome than losing my driver license.

Since Enric and you mention the line can be long, I may well not considering changing the tickets.

We will be on a cruise. If the ship is on time, we should be able to travel from the cruise port to the train station in 40 mins.

I am playing it safe, so I consider buying a set of tickets for a later departure. If after we arrive at the port, we do have enough time,
then I will change it to an earlier train. With the long line concern, we can just visit some of the sights near the port of Cadiz
before our train departs.

Thanks a lot again!
