Spain Tourism requirements "Financial Means"

Has anyone gone through Barcelona customs and been asked for proof of "financial means" when selecting tourism as reason for their trip?

I was checking my reservation on the American Airlines site and under passport and documents it does read as if you are asked to verify say, your credit card, you need a statement issued by the company internet printed verification is not allowable.

I also checked with relatives and who flew Delta and entered through Madrid and they were only asked If they had the financial means and what hotel they were staying at no statement verification was needed.

Most countries, including the US have clauses that state that they have the right to ask you for financial means to enter the country. It's highly unlikely you need to worry about it as border agents are looking for suspicious characters that may be looking to overstay their welcome.

Do you think they're doing a financial audit on every Canadian, British, American, German, etc. tourist at passport control? Are they going to call your financial advisor to talk about your IRA and consider if you need to diversify your portfolio? They're just going to look at your picture and stamp your passport. That's all they're going to do.

I don't understand why people get hung up on this. If you're there on a visa-waiver tourist trip, just look somewhat like a tourist. Bring a suitcase. Don't make plans to work while you're in Spain. Fly to Spain from the USA, Europe, or Canada and have a US, UK, Canadian, European passport.

Maybe their hotel was so ritzy that staying there was, itself, proof of financial means ;-)

It seems that some time ago, an “Ugly American” was somebody making a big show about how rich he was on vacation, ordering people around to do his bidding because he was so important, and such a big deal. Now maybe a little of that is needed, to prove you’re not so poor that you’re attempting to stay in Spain and live off of Spanish taxpayers. I’d think that anyone getting off of an international flight on American Airlines had some funds, or at least a card with a decent credit limit. I guess if you get a machine or immigration official having a bad day, you might get more scrutiny upon arrival.
