Hi travellers,i am planning a road trip with 5 other adult travellers in Aug/Sept this year.Thinking pick up mini bus/van in Barcelona then onto San Seb for 5 nts before winging it to Lisbon. All up around 14 days.Having trouble booking a suitable vehicle so any advise would be appreciated.
There will be a very high international drop charge if you drop a Spanish car in Portugsl.
You might contact one or more of the rental-car consolidators (AutoEurope, Kemwel or Gemut) to see what they suggest. Be sure you don't rent a car so large that your driver needs a specialized license he doesn't have.
It might be best to rent separate cars in each country and cross the border by public transportation or possibly by taxi.
There's not a lot of ground transportation between Spain and Portugal. There are buses and trains from Galicia (Santiago de Compostela, etc.) to northern Portugal (Porto, etc.). I'm not sure what would be the rest way to travel more directly between the Basque Country and Lisbon if you wanted to swap cars near the border.
With so much to see in Spain I’m not sure why one would want to spend so much time driving since you have a limited number of days. San Sebastion to Lisbon is a 9+ hours drive without taking any breaks, stopping for fuel, or stopping for sightseeing.
You should be able to rent a large van or minibus that fits six+ people, but an issue will be luggage space. Luggage storage space in European vehicles is generally smaller than in the U.S.
Acraven already mentioned the drop off fee.
What is the trouble? What is suitable? What is set in stone in this plan (airfare, destinations)?
As you are seeing, skipping over so much area is problematic, so what is flexible in your plan?
