I need confirmation that I can't take energy bars into Spain if they have a milk or nut derivative in them. I will have a couple in my bag just in case for the flight. I'd love to keep them for emergency in my room the first night. However, I think such things are not allowed so I'll leave them on the plane, and I'll just have to visit a grocery store that first day while I'm trying to stay awake. Correct?
I brought nut bars in with me last October. Didn’t know you couldn’t.
I think the problem is more with unprocessed food.

I always take some type of granola or energy bar with me but not need in Spain since 2017.
I have learned that some meal supplement bars...the sort of fudge brownie ones....read like C4 putty, so my hand baggage always got checked at security. I now put them in a separate bag...with all the other things they like to check...and put them into the bin separately so they don't need to dig to the bottom of my carry on. Never had any problem taki g any such items into a country, however.
I always have cashews or almonds, Lara bars and the like with me everytime I travel. Including to Spain. Have you seen something that says you can't bring processed or snack food with you?
Zero issues, they are not forbidden.
We’ve taken factory packaged fruit & nuts packages on numerous trips to Spain. Heck, some hotels have U.S. brand granola and energy bars at the breakfast buffet, so there is no problem bringing them into the country.
You are not allowed to bring any dairy products from outside the EU. https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/meat-dairy-animal/index_en.htm

The brand is one thing, where they are made is another thing. And importing otherwise banned things can be done with a lot of paper work and inspections.
Thanks Badger and everyone. I read Badger's attachment again, which is what had brought me to this question. As mine have dairy in them, I will not enter Spain with them. Unfortunately or fortunately, I arrive very early morning so I have plenty of time to entertain myself in the grocery store before I can check into my hotel and supply myself for middle of the night jet lag interruption.
I tried to find the Spain link. There is one for fruit and veg, but the link from there to the meat and dairy page (managed by Minister of Health) is broken. https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Embajadas/washington/en/Embajada/Paginas/Agriculture/Traveling-to-Spain-with-Food.aspx When I search the min of Health page, non is relevant to travelers.
In the Europa document, it states 'if not declared, may be confiscated'....
So you could declare them and if confiscated then you know the answer.
A granola bar is not a dairy product..it just contains some dairy by-product. However, logic doesn't always come into decisions.....despite the bars being processed to death, with no chance to pass on dairy related illness or contamination, some may choose to lump it with 'dairy'.
When I drive into the USA from Ontario, as I have Cuba as my place of birth on my passport, I never carrying fruit or veg
...just like the big signage tells us not to do. A friend always packs a lunch with loads of veg and fruit...but clearly for her consumption. If we travel together, I make her declare it. Both the border guys and she roll their eyes and they wave us on. At least there is some logic there.
But in the end, just take ones with no dairy and shop for a Spanish equivalent.
Just to insist a little bit more...there´s absolutely no risk at all that the Spanish customs will take your highly processed, packaged energy bars. You can bring them in without any issues.
LOL. Thanks everyone. I guess I'll do what my mood moves me toward tomorrow! In other words, wing it. I really only want a couple for the plane just in case there's a food issue... I have an entire day to shop for my mid-night jet lag hunger attack.
Of course there are certain brands and flavors you like but there are dairy free bars….says the vegan, lol. There are some Kind bars and Clif bars that are dairy free. You do have to read labels, though.
Mango. LOL I know, right? It is what I do when I know I will be tired and unable to think. Have I said I hate overnight flights? BUT for some reason I bought these tickets and I am glad I did considering what is going on strike-wise in France, American Airlines, and BA canceling local flights including Spain. And first trip internationally since Covid. Boy am I rusty!
Pam, I know. Just looking at what I have…and I like them because they are not yummy so I use them for nutrients rather than loke candy bars like some. Did I say no self control while tired? LOL
And I should listen to an expert…Mikelbasqueguide!
“and I like them because they are not yummy so I use them for nutrients rather than like candy bars like some.”
😂😂. Oh gosh…totally understand! Luna Lemon Zest bar…..just saying!
LOL Pam.
So Spain/MAD, other than the crowds at 6:20 AM and the fact they labeled the Boston flight baggage carousel as Bogota (again LOL) involved no customs form, personnel, or doors (declare vs nothing to) so was easy peasy in that regard. I was unusually anxious on this travel day, but getting my travel legs back under me now. Now if I could just sleep more than an hour at a time…
Og, excellent! Well except for traveling from Bogota, lol!!
Good walking!
