Spain's new 2024 travel regulations implemented starting tomorrow

Just wanted to give a heads up that starting Monday, December 2nd 2024, new regulations under Royal Decree 933/2021 will require hotels, rental properties, car hire companies, campsites, and similar tourism businesses to collect and submit detailed personal data from guests to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.

Hotels and businesses will collect and submit:
Passport details
Home addresses
Payment methods
Phone numbers and email addresses
Information about all travelers over age 14

Businesses must register with the Ministry of the Interior, submit data daily, and store it digitally for three years. This will affect tourists staying in hotels, campsites, or short-term rentals. Those renting cars or booking through platforms like Airbnb. The Spanish government states the new rules are for national security purposes to combat terrorism and organized crime by tracking who’s coming and going.

The new rules are mostly just adding extra paperwork, which could cause longer wait times and complicate last minute bookings or car rentals. Many businesses are implementing online registration systems to streamline the process. Expect potential delays in the coming weeks as new rules are implemented, allow extra time when checking in at hotels or picking up rental cars.
