Spain Renfe AVE Trains With Large Amounts of Luggage

Heading to Spain May 2025 with family (3 of us). We travel heavy and this will not change. Normally we fly and travel by rental car. But for Spain, teenager in family wants to experience train ride. Looking at Renfe AVE train from Barcelona to Granada and then late trip, same, Renfe AVE, from Seville to Madrid. We will be traveling in the premium class with more room between seats.

For the 3 of us will have 4 large (checked) bags (one 29", three 26") plus large "carryon" bags (backpack size) and ladies each a purse. Given the number and size of bags, will we experience problems at Barcelona or Seville train stations getting on to train AND then being able to find storage?

Is it correct that they will not closely inspect bag dimensions, weights, etc and easy to get on board AVE? Also, once on board, how likely we will find space at end of car? And if not, have I read correctly we can wheel some of the large bags into our seating area and store there, in front of legs?

If this will not work out, will likely just fly but then we will certainly need to deal with excess baggage weights. Alternatively, as fall back will just rent a car and drive. For Granada to Seville, planning to take bus, since it's a short journey and I understand very easy with large/excess baggage.

Your biggest issue is being able to move that amount of bags (7 plus purses?) between the three of you between any point a and b. Basically, it does not work to make multiple trips to shuttle luggage. This applies everywhere, even just getting to your hotel.

If you can not carry it all at one time, then you need to seriously re-examine what you need to bring.

To your original point though, yes, you should be fine on the train.

thanks. we can manage to handle and move the bags all at the same time. We've been doing the same routine across many other countries every year now for past 12 years. Just in past we have always stuck to planes and car rentals.

No problem but make sure to not put you passport or your wallet in any kind of bag and to carry valuables on you. There are professional thieves on public transportation.

Your biggest issues will likely be 1) finding a place to put those huge bags where they won't block foot traffic and 2) dealing with the stink-eye you'll get from Spaniards and others who travel lighter and hate having to tiptoe around other people's large baggage, and who hate to see one family using up all the baggage space.

Big bags and lots of them are IME regarded as bad form by most train travelers in Europe.

The three 26" bags will fit in the overhead racks, assuming you are strong enough to lift them. However, combined with your three carry-ons, you will be using up a lot of the shared overhead space. The 29" can be placed in one of the end racks.

Barcelona to Granada is a looong trip by train, about 6-7 hours. The novelty of riding a train wears off after about an hour.

I suggest that you fly. A one way flight from Barcelona to Granada on May 12, 2025 is only €25 pp and about 95 minutes. Of course, with all that baggage, you'll probably be paying hundreds in extra luggage fees. But it appears that you are used to that.

Your kid can still get his train fix from Seville to Madrid. Good luck.

You may also need two taxis or one big van-taxi to get all those bags to the station to get the train.
I’m thinking they may not all fit into one ordinary sized cab.
If Spanish trains are anything like Italian or British ones, you may have to go up and down the trains into different carriages, looking for enough spots to stow the bags.
That would mean you wouldn’t always see them from your seat.
Not trying to put you off, just trying to help you have an easier time on a European train.

Here is lots of good information:

Rethink your luggage situation. One carryon and one back pack or duffel bag/tote bag that fits over the handle of your rolling bag per person is plenty no matter how long you are gone. Read Rick’s packing tips. Watch Lisa Friend’s packing skills You Tube video. You are traveling with more than twice as much luggage as each person should have. Whatever you are putting in all that luggage is just too much stuff. Travel light and you will be amazed at how enjoyable it is to be free of the burden of excessive luggage. If you get on a train in Spain with that much luggage you deserve every nasty look you will get.

Look at The Man in Seat 61 and it will show you pictures of the train cars. Maybe that will help give you an idea of the space you’re going to get. The seats are wide, but I’m not sure about the big bags being at the seats with you. It does look like carryons will fit above. Is Granada the final stop for the train? Getting big luggage off the train in a timely manner can be an issue if it’s not the final stop and you are competing with every other person in the car for luggage space.

Do you need a lot of suitcases because you are taking a really long trip?
As in many weeks and months long?
Could you leave some of it in one place while you take a few days’ trip to another area?
That would make it easier for train travel at least.
